Yogi, Kevin … Kevin, Yogi
Carolina Panthers linebacker Kevin Greene cut his flowing locks before the season, and recently he explained why:
“Primarily, I was trying to wash my hands of three years with Pittsburgh.”
Egad, let’s hope there isn’t a razor nearby when Kevin decides to wash his hair.
A country boy can’t survive
The Vancouver Grizzlies recently stumbled through Chicago, and unfortunately for them - and for the Bulls - Chicago Tribune columnist Bernie Lincicome was on hand for a review.
“It was worth the trip to see the matchup between Bryant ‘Big Country’ Reeves and Luc ‘Outback’ Longley, two ground-loving centers whose rivalry goes back a whole season,” Lincicome wrote. “Neither will be mistaken for actual moving objects and, including the both of them, there is more air under Plymouth Rock.
“Longley won the night, blocking five of Big Country’s shots. As for Big Country, he is still more Grenada than Canada.
“I do think Reeves must be admired for being beyond embarrassment for sprouting the most unfortunate mustache since Nadia Comaneci.”
Why do you think they call it ‘hockey?’
When memorabilia from the Boston Garden was being auctioned off recently, one item that didn’t move was the hockey penalty box. Asked why, one bidder said, “Too smelly and too much spit.”
I guess I’ll just take your glasses
Troy Aikman, Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King are among the celebs who have turned in their old eyeglasses to the Gift of Sight program. Last year, more than 1 million pair were donated and delivered to those in need in Mexico, Bolivia, Tanzania and Albania. Eyeglasses are being collected by Lions clubs and are being repaired in LensCrafters stores.
So far, only Richie Garcia’s specs have been rejected.
Oh, please
The NFL has noted the similarity in the logos of Beloit College and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the school insists it didn’t plunder the pirate.
Beloit coach and athletic director Ed DeGeorge said he plucked the image of the mustachioed man in a feathered cap from a catalog 20 years ago, the same year Tampa Bay team joined the NFL.
“When I picked it out, I didn’t even know what Tampa Bay’s looked like,” DeGeorge said.
Both logos depict the same image - only Beloit’s feather points in the opposite direction.
NFL Properties, which handles the licensing and protection of the league’s logos, wrote the college Sept. 3 asking the school to stop using the design. But the school, whose teams have been the Buccaneers since 1949, refused.
“We suggested we might play them for it, but we’re just kidding,” said Ron Nief, a school spokesman. “We have similar records, but that’s about all we have in common, so I don’t think people will get us confused.”
Beloit’s football team is 0-9 while Tampa Bay is 2-8.
Now, we can see someone trying to steal the Jets’ logo, but Tampa’s?
The last word …
“The worst thing was when I compared it to Shaq’s. We both have one on the left arm, and it made me look like I had polio.”
