West Valley’s Boys, Girls Post Two Victories Apiece
Clayton Holmes and Jessica Riehle led West Valley’s cross country teams to a pair of wins Thursday in Frontier League-opening three-way meets at Plantes Ferry Park.
Holmes led the whole way and finished the 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 25 seconds as the Eagles earned narrow wins over Colville and Clarkston. WV’s Sean McLachlan (16:42) beat Colville’s Skyler Johnson on a lean for second place. Fourth-place Paul Abernathy (16:57) helped Clarkston nip Colville 27-28.
Riehle, the 1993 State AA champion, led from the start and finished in 19:51, 24 seconds up on Colville’s Crystal Evans. Fourth-place Jena Lorton (21:07) was the lone competitor from Clarkston.
At Cheney, Riverside’s boys and girls swept a three-way against the host Blackhawks and Pullman. Jon Ashcraft (16:36 for 3 miles) led the Rams’ 1-2-3 boys sweep. Fifth-place Nick O’Neill (17:44) helped Pullman edge Cheney 27-28.
Cheney’s Jeannette Zimmer, the ‘94 state champion, led the way in the girls race at 19:11, more than 2 minutes ahead of Riverside’s Makayla Gobal. Cheney also had a fourth-place finish from Rose Lathrop (21:57) to top Pullman 24-33.
Girls soccer
Stacey Drollinger’s goal from 25 yards capped Mead’s 2-0 Greater Spokane League win over University (5-2-0, 1-1-0) at Albi Stadium.
The Panthers (8-0-0, 2-0-0) also scored at 18 minutes when Nikki Anderson made a crossing pass to Kellie Leaf, who blocked in the ball off her chest. University’s freshman goalkeeper Megan Owen, a backup, stopped 13 of 15 Mead shots.
Nikki Snyder’s unassisted goal at 5 minutes ignited visiting Deer Park/Riverside (7-0-0, 6-0-0, 18 points) to a 2-0 Frontier win at East Valley (6-2-1, 4-2-1, 13).
WV (6-2-1, 6-1-0, 18) kept pace with DP/R as Dawn Salfer and Cheryl Nelson had two goals and an assist apiece in a 5-1 win at Cheney (3-5-1, 3-3-1, 10).
Clarkston (0-6-1, 1) picked up its first point with a scoreless tie at Pullman (2-2-2, 8). Erin Wahl of the Greyhounds and Clarkston’s Cinnamon Anderson earned the shutouts.
At Colville (1-7-0, 1-6-0, 3), Julie Paikuli scored at 37 minutes on a loose ball in front of the net as Medical Lake (2-6-1, 2-4-1, 7) edged the Indians 1-0.
Volleyball
Tracie Thayer’s eight kills and five blocks helped visiting Clarkston (3-2) beat WV 15-13, 15-7, 15-6 in the Frontier League.
Rochelle King added 20 assists and two aces for the Bantams. Rachelle Watson had nine kills and six digs for the Eagles (1-4), who came back from an 11-3 first-game deficit to trail 13-12 before losing.
At Riverside, Paula Olson’s nine kills guided Cheney (1-4) to a 15-6, 15-6, 15-9 win over the Rams (0-5). Cheryl Talant had nine digs and three kills for Riverside, which held the Blackhawks at 14 for five points in the third game before fading.
