Porter Wears Match-Play Crown

Dan Porter, the assistant pro at Downriver Golf Club, defeated Mark Gardner 1 up Sunday to win the Inland Empire PGA Match Play Championships at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Porter frequently held a slight edge in the tightly played final. He went 1 up on his rival, the pro at The Creek at Qualchan, at the sixth hole, fell back on No. 9 then regained the lead at No. 12.

After Gardner pulled even on the 14th hole, Porter went 1 up again on No. 17 then halved the last hole.

Baseball

University of Southern California’s national powerhouse gave host Gonzaga a taste of its offensive production Saturday afternoon, thumping the host Bulldogs 9-6 on the second day of the Evans, Craven & Lackie College Baseball Tournament at August/A.R.T. Stadium.

The Trojans bunched seven of their nine hits with walks and Gonzaga errors to score five runs in the first inning and four more in the seventh. The Bulldogs sent home all of their runs in the eighth.

Washington outlasted Oregon State 8-7 in the morning game.

USC will face Oregon State at 11 a.m. and Gonzaga will meet Washington at 2:30 p.m. when the robinrobin tournament ends today.

Brendan Hare, who had four hits and four RBIs in Gonzaga’s victory over Oregon State on Friday, contributed a two-run double to the Bulldogs’ big inning Saturday.
