Cigar-Skip Away Rematch In Breeders’ Cup Uncertain

Compiled From Wire Services

Both Cigar and Skip Away, the 3-year-old colt who beat him by a head in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, were healthy and frisky Sunday on the morning after their duel at Belmont Park.

But the issue of a return match in the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Classic in three weeks was still unresolved because, Sonny Hine. Skip Away’s trainer, said, “I don’t know if it’s worth putting up $480,000 to try to beat Cigar again.”

Meanwhile, other horses were completing two days of eight stakes races billed as the Breeders’ Cup Preview. In the Beldame, Yanks Music made the splashiest showing when she made her customary rally and ran down Serena’s Song for the second straight time to establish a clear lead in the fillies ranking.

Yanks Music, a 3-year-old daughter of Air Forbes Won trained by Leo O’Brien, has won three races in a row and seven of nine and finished second in the other two. Serena’s Song, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, has raced 36 times in three seasons and may be showing it. She lost for the fifth straight time.

In the other stakes, Lukas scored a trainer’s coup in the Boojum when his 4-year-old colt Lord Carson sprinted wire to wire to win and his 3-year-old star Honour and Glory finished second.

In Paris, Helissio led nearly all the way in registering a five-length victory in the Prix de Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s most prestigious horse race.

Admise, who finished 1-3/4 lengths behind Bon Point, was awarded the victory in the $300,000 Oak Tree Turf Championship at Arcadia, Calif., when Bon Point was disqualified.
