Several Inland Northwest residents placed at the Northeast Washington Fiddle Contest held last August in Colville, Wash.

The categories, winners, ages and home towns are:

Michael Edward Dahl received the Good Citizen Award from the Jonas Babcock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Dahl, son of John and Shirley Dahl, is a 1996 graduate of Valley Christian School. He is attending George Fox University in Newberg, Ore., which gave him an $8,500 grant.

Dr.Dawn (Moon) Thompson, a former Spokane resident, was selected by her peers at the University of Southern California Medical School to be the commencement speaker for their May graduation ceremony.

Thompson, a Ferris High School graduate, is completing her residency in pediatric medicine at Mount Siani Hospital in New York City.

She is the daughter of Diana Moon, a former Spokane elementary principal.

Paul A. Schweitzer, 12, Pullman, won first prize among 483 entries in the Weatherwise magazine’s 12th annual photo contest. Schweitzer’s photograph, a cloud ballet whirling across the Pullman skies, is featured with 10 other winners in the August/ September issue of Weatherwise.

Master athletes Durwood “Andy” Anderson, Spokane, and Sue Hinz, Pullman, were recognized by Washington State Summer Games officials for their participation in the games.

Anderson, a retired school coach of 18 years, began participating in track and field four years ago after officiating at the National Masters Meet in Spokane. He competes in the 80-84 age group in the discus, hammer, javelin and the 100M.

Hinz, a Washington State University staff member, is a national masters record holder in the hammer throw. She also competes in the shot put, discus and javelin.

Both hold USA Track and Field records for the Eastern Washington Association.

Noah Barfield received the $1,000 Don and Julia Lee Education Scholarship at Washington State University, where he is studying English and secondary education. He is the son of Cynthia and Coy Barfield, Spokane.

Annie Gregory, a junior at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, was elected into Mortar Board, the national senior honor society. Membership in the Torch Chapter is based on service, scholarship and leadership.

She also received the Beth Ellsworth Memorial Scholarship from the English department.

A 1993 graduate of North Central High School, she is the daughter of David and Judy Gregory, Spokane.

Carol A. Wold, Spokane, recently had her poem, “Love Is,” accepted for “Tapestry of Thought,” an anthology published by The National Library of Poetry.

Dennis Roberts, Kettle Falls, Wash., received the Leaders in Prevention: Inspiring Hope Award from the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Fifteen Washington state residents were recognized for their involvement in developing safe and drug-free schools.

Roberts, a volunteer with Spokane Youth for Christ, developed a Kettle Falls youth center, Campus Life Center. The center is staffed four nights a week, providing positive activities, caring adult relationships and fun activities. Roberts also works full time for The Staff of Life in Kettle Falls.

The Esther Reed Chapter of the National Association of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently installed the following officers:

Regent, Elna Anne Paulson; first vice regent. Judy Batchelder; second vice regent, Frances Sams; chaplain, Bobbee Hepworth; recording secretary, Imohl Reid; corresponding secretary, Kim Batchelder; treasurer, Roberta Hannant; registrar, Carmen Hagman; historian, Janet Stead; and librarian, Sandra Hanley.

Seven Eastern Washington University students have been commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army: Jason Archibald, Derek Bowls, Kermit Brown, Kurt Harsh, Jeffrey Jeydnak, Darin Neiwert and Robert Richardson.

Four Inland Northwest students have received $1,500 United Security Bank/Joanie Goldbert Memorial Scholarship based on scholastics, school activities and community imvolvement.

Julie Hedrick, a graduate of Colville High School, planneds to attend Washington State University.

Kurt Grytdal, Jenkins High School, intended to attend Washington State University.

Jessica Hall, Riverside High School, planned to attend Western Washington University.

Guy Baribault, Northport High School, expected to attend Spokane Falls Community College.

Jonathan Price, a University of Puget Sound sophomore and graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, received a $600 THRUST scholarship from the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association and the Washington division of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.

Price is the son of Jim and Ann Price, Spokane.

Navy Petty Officer First Class David L. Goertzen received the Navy Good Conduct Medal, recognizing honest and faithful service during a three-year period.

Goertzen, a 1984 graduate of Central Valley High School and son of Robert and Jane Goertzen, Greenacres, joined the Navy in June 1984.

Michele Warner, a 1992 graduate of Mead High School, graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Washington with a degree in economics. She is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and made the National Dean’s List the past two years.

She is the daughter of Mike and JoAnne Warner.
