Streakin Flyer Does
Streakin Flyer, a hyper horse with an older jockey, ran straight and strong to outrun the filly Speedy Empress in the 440-yard, $2 million All American Futurity.
The 2-year-old gelding broke alertly from the No. 7 post in the straightaway race and overtook early leader and pre-race favorite Blushin Bugs 220 yards into the sprint.
With 46-year-old jockey Larry Layton aboard, Streakin Flyer held off a late run from Speedy Empress and jockey Alex Baldillez. Mr Special Express, who dueled early with Blushin Bugs for the lead, held on for third.
The win - the fourth in six races this summer for Streakin Flyer - was worth $1 million to his owners, Janelle and Mike Green of Pelzer, S.C.
B. Charlie won the $35,000 Governor’s Handicap in a track-record time and jockey Frank Gonsalves won five races to set a track record on Labor Day at Emerald Downs.
B. Charlie, ridden by Antonio Castanan, broke a 6-1/2-furlong Emerald Downs record held by nine horses with a sprint of 1:16-1/5.
Gonsalves rode in each race on the 10-race holiday card. He won the first four races and finished in the money in nine overall. After he won the last race, Gonsalves posted a 5-2-2 record.
