Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: Could you please explain about securing windows with a long bolt? How this is done? We recently installed outdoor security lights and deadbolt locks on the doors and sliding glass door, but we would like to use the extra bolt as a backup to the standard window locks. - Jane S., Miami, Fla.

This is an added security measure that won’t cost an arm and a leg, and you can easily do it yourself. Use a drill bit a little larger than the bolt you choose, so the bolt can slide in and out easier.

First, make sure the window is closed and locked. Then drill a hole in the inside of the window frame approximately 4 to 6 inches above the opening window frame. The distance of the bolt can be changed depending on how far you want the window to open when the bolt is in - don’t leave enough for someone to crawl through!

Insert the bolt into the hole. Whenever you need to open the window all the way, just remove the bolt. - Heloise
