Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: A very nice spreader for sand, salt, sand/salt mix, grass seed, lime or fertilizer can be made from two 6-by-4 plastic flowerpots.

The pots must be the type with four drainage holes each. Place one pot within the other, making sure holes are not in line. Scoop out desired dry material and shake horizontally to spread. The alignment of holes and the degree of shaking will determine distribution.

I find this arrangement excellent for patching lawns with grass seed in the summer and sanding/ salting sidewalks and drives in the winter. - Charles Mobus, Warren, N.J.
