UI Tops Uconn, Improves To 7-0

Undefeated Idaho hit a series of peaks and valleys Friday but finished on top of Connecticut 15-11, 15-13, 15-11 in its opening-round match at the Vandal Classic volleyball tournament at Moscow, Idaho.

In the opener, Eastern Washington defeated a 2-6 DePaul team 15-7, 8-15, 5-11, 15-12.

The Vandals, in winning their 47th consecutive match in Memorial Gym, improved to 7-0 while UConn dropped to 4-3.

Idaho senior setter Lynne Hyland had 42 assists, which led to four players in double-figure kills. Jeri Hymas, Louisa Kawulok and Beth Craig had 12 each and Jessica Moore 11.

Eastern’s Kim Exner led the Eagles (4-2) with 18 assists and 17 digs. Toni Schwinn had 31 assists.

Jennifer Kubista led all hitters with 15 kills, but Michigan overpowered Gonzaga 15-3, 15-5, 15-9 in the nightcap of the fifth Spikeoff Spokane at Martin Centre.

Michigan backup setter Erin McGovern of Sandpoint had five assists and one kill while seeing limited duty in game three.

At Whitworth, Linfield College used a nine-point run in the second game and two five-point runs in the third game in its 15-10, 15-4, 15-8 victory over Whitworth.

Katie Jo Borgman led the Pirates (0-2 NCIC, 1-7) with 10 kills, and Sarah Schaumberg contributed 18 digs. Linfield improved to 1-1, 1-3.

Women’s soccer

Katie Tyrrell scored in the second overtime period to lift Gonzaga past Utah State 1-0 at the Diadora Tournament in Missoula.

The Bulldogs and Aggies played 109 minutes, 28 seconds before Tyrrell scored an unassisted goal from the left wing as Gonzaga improved to 1-3.

Men’s soccer

Jeff McAllister teamed with Mike Thompson twice in the first half to pace Gonzaga past Sacramento State 3-0 at the Umbro Classic in San Jose, Calif.

Thompson, a freshman midfielder, added a goal at 88:53 as the Bulldogs lifted their record to 2-3.

Cross country

Freshman Tammi Green led the Washington State women’s cross country team to its second title of the year in the university division as the Cougars won the Idaho Invitational for the third year in a row.

WSU’s women edged Boise State 33-34 followed by Gonzaga with 66 and Idaho’s 77.

In the men’s race on the University of Idaho Golf Course, Boise State captured the title with 21 points, followed by WSU with 41, Idaho with 63, and Gonzaga, 85.

Green led all WSU women with a third-place time of 15:05. BSU claimed first and second places.

The top male finisher was BSU’s Cormak Schmitz, who won the 4-mile race in 19:37. Cougars sophomore Rasto Klplangat of Nairobi, Kenya, was second at 19:49.

In the women’s college division, Whitworth tied Community Colleges of Spokane 30-30. Whitworth’s Dana Ryan won with a time of 16:25 and CCS’s Kelcey Myerswas second at 16:47.

In the men’s college division, Lane Community College edged CCS 30-32. Whitworth was third at 59.

Individually, Shawn Beitlespacher of CCS captured third, finishing in 21:17.
