Shipley Wins Men’s Kayak At Nationals
Kayaker Scott Shipley rebounded from a disappointing finish in the Summer Olympics to win the men’s singles in the Whitewater National Championships on Saturday.
More than 150 paddlers took part in the competition sponsored by NationsBank.
Competition in the six Olympic classes took place on the Grizzly River Rampage water ride at Opryland Themepark.
Shipley, who won the nationals in 1995 and the Slalom World Cup in 1994, was the favorite in the Summer Games but finished 12th.
Shipley’s run bested junior kayaker Scott Parsons, who finished second.
Cathy Hearn won the women’s single competition, and teamed with Lecky Haller to win the mixed doubles canoe title.
David Hearn, Cathy Hearn’s brother, won the men’s single canoe.
