Claar Takes Early Lead

Compiled From Wire Services

Soggy greens and a stiff breeze proved an equalizer during the opening round of the B.C. Open - for everyone but Brian Claar.

Claar sank a 35-foot birdie putt on the troublesome 15th hole to emerge from a jumble of golfers and claim the top spot at the En-Joie Golf Club with a 5-under-par 66.

Six golfers were chasing Claar at one stroke back, while Tiger Woods and seven others were down two strokes with 54 holes remaining.
