Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: My husband and I are seniors who love to garden. In order to protect peat moss, potting soil and fertilizers from the elements and to reduce waste, we bought several large garbage cans with wheels on them. We lined them up right against the outside greenhouse wall.

When we are working in the greenhouse they are nearby and handy without clutter or unsightliness, and when we want to work on a flower bed anywhere around the yard, it is easy to roll them to the work spot and return to their resting place when we are finished. With the lids kept firmly in place, everything stays dry, handy and usable all year.

When it’s time to replenish an item, we roll the trash can to our pickup and position it under the tailgate, pull the sack of material over the edge of the can, slit the sack and let the material pour into the can. It saves a lot of lifting and avoids spilling the material. - M. Windham, Columbia, S.C.
