Snacks For Post-School Hunger

The Associated Press

When kids come home from school, they usually ask for snacks.

Having good-for-you, easy-to-assemble snack ingredients on hand can satisfy after-school hunger pangs in a snap. Keep kid-pleasing veggies like baby carrots, cherry tomatoes and sugar snap peas chilled in the refrigerator, along with seedless grapes, orange sections, strawberries and apples.

In the pantry, store pretzels and whole-grain crackers. Keep miniature bagels in the freezer.

The American Dairy Association recommends the following snacks to help meet the current guidelines of two to three servings of dairy foods each day for kids 2 years of age and older:

For “help-yourself” snacking, stock the refrigerator with fruit yogurt in small containers, milk in chocolate and fruit flavors, puddings and string cheese.

Spread mild ricotta cheese on cinnamon-raisin minibagels; top each with a slice of apple.

Kid-favorite cheeses - Cheddar, Muenster and Colby - go well with whole-grain crackers and can be cut into cubes to eat with strawberries and grapes.

Shredded mozzarella, pizza sauce and toasted English muffins or miniature pita rounds provide the makings for kid-size pizzas.
