Depth Key As Saxons Tip Tigers

GSL volleyball

The way Missy Blackshire had it figured, Lewis and Clark was outnumbered when the Tigers arrived at Ferris for a Greater Spokane League volleyball match Tuesday night.

“We’re one of the only teams in the GSL deeper than six people,” she said. “Everyone who plays gives something to the game. We can mix it up.”

With Blackshire contributing 12 kills, four blocks and three aces, the Saxons swept - but just barely - their South Hill rivals 15-10, 16-14, 15-13. Amy George had 17 digs and Janelle Morrisette had 36 assists.

“We played really well, it was one of our best matches,” Blackshire said. “Every single person on the court played well, there were no stars.”

The win sets up a showdown with surprising Rogers Saturday at Ferris. Both teams are 6-0 entering the 7 p.m. match. LC dropped to 3-3.

Darcy Ruemping served out the last eight points of the first game when Morrisette took charge with assists on five of the points. LC rallied from a 12-8 deficit in the second game and twice served for the match, but the Saxons scored the final four points. In the last game, Ferris took an 11-4 lead before LC went up 13-12. Then Jennifer Meeker served out the match for the Saxons.

“I thought we showed flashes of brilliance, but we struggled the last few games,” Ferris coach Stacey Ward said. “We have to cut down on serving errors and hitting errors. I do have to say I’m pretty proud of them for coming back in the second game.”

LC didn’t give up either as Shannon Snow had 10 kills, Carlin Oeljen l0 digs and Erika Robinson and Oeljen five blocks, apiece.

“I am pleased with our performance,” LC coach Buzzie Welch said. “We still have trouble finishing…. We played a good team tonight. Although it only went three games, they were good games.”

Elsewhere, Kate Hanson had 25 digs and 13 kills as Rogers stopped visiting North Central 15-12, 12-15, 15-5, 15-6.

Jaime Christensen added 34 digs for the Pirates, who last won six league matches in 1984. Shannon Nelson had 10 kills and three aces, and Sarah Menard 11 assists and seven digs for the Indians (1-5).

Jessica Sanborn’s seven kills and seven digs guided third-place Mead (5-1) to a 15-3, 15-4, 15-11 win over visiting University (0-7).

Kelsey Sturm added 16 assists for Mead.

Meghann Green had 13 digs and seven of Gonzaga Prep’s 16 aces to lead the Bullpups (4-2) over visiting Shadle Park 13-15, 15-11, 15-7, 15-12.
