Students Exposed To Pepper Spray
Two dozen students were exposed to pepper spray and taken to area hospitals Friday after a spray canister was set off by two children fighting over it.
None of the 24 schoolchildren exposed to the spray was seriously injured, said Seattle Fire Department spokesman Paul Feist.
The canister, on a key ring, was brought to Muir Elementary School by a parent volunteer, said Seattle Public Schools spokesman Dorothy Dubia.
The students were taken by ambulance and bus to Harborview Medical Center and Children’s Hospital.
Larry Zalin, a spokesman at Harborview, said the students were being treated for coughing, respiratory distress and burning eyes. He said there were no life-threatening injuries.
The children were given showers and their clothes decontaminated, and oxygen was administered to those who needed it, Zalin said.
