Guards Back Again
An eight-month experiment will end Tuesday when Fort Lewis puts full-time guards back at its gates.
Since Jan. 27, civilians have been allowed to come and go as part of an effort by army law enforcement to cut crime by taking military police off guard duty and posting them on patrols elsewhere on the compound.
While the overall crime rate on post went down 25 percent, an illegal dumping problem returned.
People use the fort’s woods and backroads as a garbage dump.
