Gil Morgan took advantage of rain-softened greens on the Cochise Course at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Ariz., Friday to record his second straight 6-under-par 66.

His 36-hole total of 132 was good for a two-stroke lead over Terry Dill, John Jacobs and Isao Aoki at the midpoint of The Tradition, the season’s first senior major.

Jim Dent, Graham Marsh and J.C. Snead were five shots back at 137, with George Archer at 138 and Walter Morgan at 139 among challengers in the tournament.

Simon Hobday, who shared the lead with Morgan, Jacobs, Aoki and Snead after the first round, was in a six-member group at 140, and Jack Nicklaus followed his opening 67 with a 2-over 74 to land at 141.

Inkster leads, youngster misses cut

Juli Inkster, winless on the LPGA Tour for nearly five years, shot a 4-under-par 68 and held a one-stroke lead over reigning U.S. Open titlist Annika Sorenstam after the second round of the Longs Drugs Challenge at Lincoln, Calif.

Inkster, winner of 15 career tournaments, has a 4-under-par 140 score as the winds calmed on a warm and sunny day at Twelve Bridges Golf Club.

Sorenstam equaled Inkster for the best round of the day and was at 141.

Natalie Gulbis, 14, of Citrus Heights, Calif., who tour officials said was the second-youngest player ever to compete in an LPGA tournament, shot a 12-over-par 84 and missed the cut with a 165 total, 21 over par.

Robin Walton of Clarkston barely made the cut, shooting a 74 for a total of 152, but Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, missed the cut with a total of 156.

McCarron, Rinker tame wind

Defending champion Scott McCarron and Larry Rinker pulled away from the field in the Freeport-McDermott Classic at New Orleans, shooting 3-under-par 69s in windy conditions to reach 10-under 134.

Michael Christie and Brad Faxon were three back at 137 on the English Turn Golf and Country Club course. Christie shot a 67 and Faxon had a 69. Christie, who earned his tour card last year by finishing second on the Nike Tour money list, needed just 25 putts Thursday and 24 on Friday.
