Remember, The Early Lizard Gets The Bird

Compiled By Staff Writer Rick Bo

No, that’s not a milk mustache on Newt Gingrich’s lip in the latest issue of Advertising Age magazine.

Then again, if you look closely, it’s not a real advertisement, either.

It’s a Comedy Central network parody of those ubiquitous “Milk - Where’s your mustache?” celebrity ads, featuring the House speaker with a crow’s foot and feathers poking out of his mouth.

The mock sales pitch: “Crow: Not too hard to swallow.”

In the words beneath the photo, Gingrich allegedly explains: “Hey, I’m a politician. And I know how to eat crow when I have to …

“The key is to start early. With just a few feathers a day, then when the time comes to swallow a whole bird, you won’t gag a bit.”

Loose talk

Big Bird, on his heroes (in Life magazine): “My heroes are Larry Bird, Admiral Byrd, Lady Bird, Sheryl Crow, Chick Corea, the inventor of birdseed and anyone who reads to you even if she’s tired.”

Suppose that his bird sings Brian’s song?

Billy Dee Williams turns 60 today.

So, he should have added insult to a jury?

A French court has dismissed Saddam Hussein’s libel suit against the weekly Le Nouvel Observateur, which referred to the Iraqi leader as a “perfect idiot,” a “killer” and a “monster” in a 1996 editorial. The court ruled Hussein should have sued under statutes protecting chiefs of state from insult, rather than under libel laws.

You can’t blame her for saying so oolong

Meanwhile, an Israeli court found right-leaning Yisrael Lederman guilty of intentionally throwing hot tea last fall at left-leaning Knesset member Yael Dayan, daughter of late Gen. Moshe Dayan. After the court adjourned, Lederman invited Yael Dayan to his home to talk about the incident - over tea. She declined.

He’d better give the ol’ cardiac a rest

Observers held their breath when a fully suited Sen. Strom Thurmond, 94, plopped himself down on a piece of exercise equipment before a speech at a South Carolina fitness center and tried to pump the machine. After straining for a few moments, Thurmond, known to nod off in the Senate, stood and walked away.

Hey, we’re just one big dough nation

Former Sen. Bill Bradley has signed on to do pieces about American life for the “CBS Evening News,” but he wasn’t thrilled with the network naming him a “contributor.” In politics, said the onetime basketball star, “Contributor is a dangerous word these days.”

And no one knows how to get the foul out

Despite his team’s loss in the NCAA championship game, Kentucky basketball coach Rick Pitino is probably popular enough to be elected governor - if anyone could convince him to run, that is. “It’s just that I don’t think it’s a noble profession,” Pitino said.
