Pen/Faulkner Winner Announced
“Women in Their Beds,” by Gina Berriault, has won the 1997 PEN/ Faulkner Award for Fiction.
A collection of 35 short stories, “Women in Their Beds” (Counterpoint) also won this year’s National Book Critics Circle award.
The other nominees were Daniel Akst, for “St. Burl’s Obituary” (MacMurray & Beck); Kathleen Cambor, for “The Book of Mercy” (Farrar Straus Giroux); Ron Hansen, for “Atticus” (HarperCollins), and Jamaica Kincaid, for “The Autobiography of My Mother” (Farrar Straus Giroux).
Berriault will receive $15,000. The runners-up will each receive $5,000.
