Richard Krajicek, cranking up serves that reached 129 mph, made a strong recovery after dropping his only set of the tournament to beat Lionel Roux 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and capture the Japan Open tennis tournament in Tokyo.

Krajicek, the 1996 Wimbledon champion, won his second title of the year and raised his match record to 15-4. The Dutchman has renewed confidence following knee surgery last year and a difficult six months afterward.

Grant Hackett capped Australia’s dominance of the World Swimming Short Course Championships in Goteborg, Sweden, by winning the 1,500-meter men’s freestyle, coming from behind against German stalwart Jorg Hoffmann.

Hackett finished the grueling race, the meet’s final event, in a championships-record 14 minutes, 39.54 seconds, bringing Australia’s medals total to 19, nine of them golds.

Bill May finished 10th in the National Sychronized Swimming Championships at the YMCA Aquatic Center at Orlando, Fla., on Saturday. Just being able to compete without getting sneers as the only man was a victory.

May’s teammate on the Santa Clara Aquamaids, Anna Kozlova, took home the solo crown with a score of 95.68, followed by teammate Carrie Barton and Becky Jasontek, of Ohio State. Kozlova and Charlotte Massardier won the duet with 94.62 points.
