The United States squandered a three-goal lead but Todd Krygier, the Washington Capitals forward, scored with 6:23 remaining for a 5-4 victory over Latvia at the Hockey World Championships in Finland. Don Brashear of the Vancouver Canucks, Bryan Berard of the New York Islanders, Paul Ranheim of the Hartford Whalers and Chris Tancill of the San Jose Sharks also scored for the United States.

In other games, Slovakia held favored Russia to a 2-2 tie, while the Czech Republic, the defending champion, beat Finland 2-1 and Sweden cruised to a 7-2 victory over Canada.

Seven U.S. cities, including a new entry from the San Francisco Bay area, indicate they will submit entries and deposit checks by the May 1 deadline set by the U.S. Olympic Committee for bids to host the 2008 Summer Olympics.

So far, checks have been received from potential bidders in Cincinnati, Houston and Seattle. And groups from Baltimore, New York, San Francisco and Washington also said they will file by the deadline.

TJ Rubley’s three touchdown passes led the Rhein Fire to a 23-10 victory over the Scottish Claymores in Edinburgh, Scotland, sending the defending World League football champions to their second straight loss.
