With the nasty high-water start of fishing on Lake Pend Oreille, few anglers have heard about the $10,000 Mackinaw Fishing Derby that started May 24 and runs through Sept. 1.

“We have a lot of prize money but very few entries,” said Lori Pooch of the sponsoring Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club. The water’s fine now, and Steve Palumbo from Evans, Wash., is leading the small field of entrants with a mackinaw weighing 29 pounds, 10 ounces.
