Robby Gordon Talks About Leaving Winston Cup

Compiled From Wire Services

Robby Gordon said Tuesday he may need to leave Winston Cup racing to repair the damage this season has done to his career.

“My reputation has taken a pretty good hit,” Gordon said. “The important thing for me is to get into a position to win races and build my reputation back up again.”

Gordon drives a Chevrolet owned by Felix Sabates, but chances he will continue in that role appear increasingly remote. Gordon said he had an offer to drive on the Championship Auto Racing Teams circuit in 1998.

“Right now is the period where a lot of seats for next year are being taken,” he said. “I think I only have about a week because I am afraid of letting the (CART) deal fly by.”

Sabates said he and Gordon would meet this week.

Earlier this season, Gordon and crew chief Tony Glover had a personality clash that forced a move of Gordon to a new team within the Sabates team.

Las Vegas celebrated its selection Tuesday as the newest stop on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit. The race will be held March 1.

It will among 33 races on the Winston Cup schedule next season - the largest number in 25 years. NASCAR downsized its elite division to about 30 races per year in 1972 after running as many as 60 at times in the 1960s.
