Prison Still Locked Down After Stabbing

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Idaho Maximum Security Institution remained locked down Monday after a northern Idaho inmate was stabbed twice in the back.

Officials were still looking for the weapon used Sunday evening to stab the 29-year-old man serving a prison term for grand theft and burglary.

The inmate, whose name was not disclosed, was in critical condition at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center after several hours of surgery Sunday night, Idaho Department of Correction spokesman Mark Carnopis said.

“He had two four-inch-deep puncture wounds in his back, so we’re looking for an ice-pick, a letter opener, something of that design,” Carnopis said.

The stabbing occurred about 5:30 p.m. in the A-Block of the prison south of Boise. Prisoners have been restricted to their cells since the incident.
