Good Day For Huard, UW Offense
It was a good day, quarterback Brock Huard said, that followed a bad day.
The Huskies made it through their first of two major preseason scrimmages without a serious injury, which became even more important after the UW lost receiver Gerald Harris for the season on Friday to a knee injury that will require complex surgery to repair two torn ligaments.
The No. 1 offense scored on all three of its Huard-led possessions against the No. 2 defense, then almost completed a long pass against the No. 1 defense in a 2-minute drill situation.
“It was almost a perfect day for us,” said Huard, who threw a touchdown pass of 34 yards to Cam Cleeland on the first series of the day and finished completing 6 of 10 passes for 107 yards.
There are no real battles for starting positions for the Huskies save for punter and kicker.
Sophomore Randy Jones of Ferris High School, the only kicker on scholarship, was 5 of 6, missing from 40 yards out, and appears the front-runner for the position after recovering quickly from a case of turf toe he suffered earlier this week.
JC transfer Sean O’Laughlin, the only punter on scholarship, appears to have the edge on walkon Ryan Chicoine, a Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) High product, who was the starter after spring practice. O’Laughlin had a 39.75-yard average on four punts while Chicoine had a 36.25 average on four punts.
