Miller Skips Vault
World University Games all-around gymnastics champion Shannon Miller withdrew right before the vault with a hamstring injury.
She did participate in the uneven bars, where the injury would not be as much of a factor, and finished fifth.
Miller, a 16-time Olympic and world medalist, already said she’ll skip the World Championships. She may not compete internationally again, but indicated the 1998 Goodwill Games are still a possibility.
Italian gymnast Yuri Chechi collected another gold medal, winning the rings event, before announcing he’ll decide his future in the sport today.
Chechi, the reigning Olympic champion, turned in a powerful routine to win with a score of 9.8, earning Italy its first gold of the games.
