Donnan Turns Down Unc

While calling it a lifelong dream, Georgia football coach Jim Donnan said he rejected a lucrative offer to become Mack Brown’s successor at North Carolina.

Brown resigned Thursday to take the job at Texas, and Donnan quickly moved to the top of potential candidates after guiding the No. 12 Bulldogs to a 9-2 season and a spot in the Outback Bowl.

Donnan grew up in Burlington, N.C., and was a former Tar Heels assistant.

In Baton Rouge, La., Tulane football player Dwight J. Jones Jr. shot a former LSU player who cut his car off at an intersection and confronted a passenger he allegedly had hit the day before.

Baton Rouge police said the woman passenger had filed assault and harassment complaints on Friday against former LSU walk-on Joseph M. Bean, who was in critical condition Sunday.

Jones, a defensive end for Tulane, called police from a nearby pay phone to turn himself in Saturday afternoon for shooting Bean. District Attorney Doug Moreau’s office will decide whether to file charges or whether the shooting was justifiable, Thompson said.
