Just The Old Story Of The Prince And The Pauper
When Prince Charles was touring the offices of the Big Issue, a British magazine sold by the homeless, a transient turned to him and asked: “Do you realize we were at school together?”
It turned out Clive Harold attended London’s exclusive Hill House School with Charles when they were 8. Harold, the son of a millionaire financier, became a successful author and magazine writer but turned to alcohol after his second marriage fell apart 10 years ago.
Charles reminisced about the sweets the school’s headmistress handed out. Then he patted Harold on the back and said, “As long as you’re all right, that’s the main thing.”
Said Harold afterward: “The prince did not remember me, of course, and I only remember him because we both had big ears and because he was obviously well-known there.”
Loose talk
The late Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, to a divorce court judge who asked whether his marriage had broken: “It is so broken down, my Lord.”
Let’s hope that fate hands Henry the 68th
Buck Henry turns 67 today.
Prince or not, he still has to share the throne
Speaking of British schoolboys, YM magazine reports Prince William has graduated into full hunkdom at Eton. At age 15, he’s a knockout at 6 feet 1-1/2 inches - even with braces. His nicknames are “Wombat” and “Dreamboat Willy,” and he’s so popular that his clothes have to be locked up to discourage schoolmates from stealing them as souvenirs.
You could say that she settled for a royal sum
The details of the settlement awarded Victoria Lockwood when the former model’s divorce from philandering Earl Spencer was formally granted last week: Lockwood, who had asked for $6.3 million, will get a one-time payment of $3.05 million, her car, her Cape Town house, and $6,600 a year for each of their children while she lives in South Africa. That will rise to $7,400 a year if she moves to Britain.
Sounds like a real land mine, er, gold mine
A limited edition of purple Beanie Baby bears named for Princess Diana go on sale this week at Chicago area stores. Profits from the sale of the toys, adorned with a white embroidered rose and a purple satin ribbon, will be donated to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, which benefits her favorite charities.
Then the media chewed them up and spit them out
Finally, this description of how Diana and Dodi Fayed fell in love, from the chief stewardess on his father’s yacht (in The News of the World): “Diana was wearing a lovely summery dress. Dodi spilt some fruit and Diana playfully scooped it up and threw it at him. He tossed it back and within seconds a full-scale food fight was in progress… They were chasing each other and laughing and giggling like a couple of kids. Then they wrestled a bit and stopped, just staring at each other … Something had passed between them. Suddenly they seemed to fit as a couple.”
