Middle School Named Woodland; Kids Pick Grizzlies As Mascot

The Coeur d’Alene School District has chosen Woodland as the name of its new middle school.

Middle school students voted overwhelmingly in favor of Grizzlies over Mustangs as the school’s mascot, much to the disappointment of Canfield Middle School Principal James Lien, who will take over as principal of Woodland next fall when the school opens.

“I personally wanted the Mustangs because I envisioned the principal would have to drive the mascot to school,” Lien joked.

Woodland Middle School won over several other names under consideration, including Forest Glen, Forest Grove and Fairway. The name Fairway Eagles was cast aside as “too cute” after sports-minded committee members noticed the golf pun.

Some committee members said some of the best names already have been taken by other districts. Mountain View is a new Spokane school, and Timberlake is the new high school scheduled to open next fall in the Lakeland School District.

Lien said the committee received very few prank names.

“The kids took it very, very seriously,” he said.
