Forest Industry Group Opens Meeting Today

Ecosystem management and forestry in the 21st Century will be discussed at the Intermountain Forest Industry Association’s annual meeting.

The meeting begins today at 10 a.m. at The Coeur d’Alene Resort. It starts with an overview of the association’s communication program.

The first workshop starts at 1 p.m. It is titled “Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project and includes Jay O’Laughlin from the University of Idaho, Tom Goodall from Boise Cascade and private consultant Hank Robison. A second workshop, called “Federal Land Management Alternatives,” will include Michael Jackson from the Quincy Library Group and Randall O’Toole, from the Thoreau Institute.

The association’s business meeting will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursday. U.S. Sen. Dirk Kempthorne will speak at the noon luncheon on federal legislation and natural resource issues. U.S. Sen. Larry Craig also has been invited to speak on his new forest management legislation.

Thursday afternoon Forest Service and industry officials will participate in a panel discussion on “Forestry and Conservation: Modern Solutions for the 21st Century.” The panel will be moderated by Brian Kahn of Artemis/Common Ground. , DataTimes
