Bowman Will Go To Stanford

Sandpoint High standout wide receiver Caleb Bowman has canceled the rest of his travel plans.

A trip to Stanford last weekend confirmed his desire to play at the Palo Alto, Calif., school. Bowman gave the Cardinal an oral commitment Sunday.

Bowman had trips scheduled to UCLA this weekend and Colorado the following weekend. He visited California earlier in the fall. He turned down a scholarship offer from Nebraska.

He plans to sign a letter of intent Feb. 2, the first day of the signing period.

A state sprint champion last spring, the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder caught 65 passes for 1,220 yards and 19 touchdowns this fall, all school records. His contributions were key in leading Sandpoint to its first State A-1 Division II championship.

Bowman carries a 3.6 grade-point average. Stanford’s academic tradition impressed Bowman as much as the football program, he said.

He joins Austin Lee of Post Falls, who redshirted this season.

Bowman was named the Inland Empire League’s most valuable player on offense.

Former Lakeland High wrestler Travis Pascoe, who transferred to Gonzaga Prep this year, was named outstanding wrestler at a season-opening tournament in Deer Park, Wash., last weekend.

Pascoe, who finished second at state as a freshman last year at 145 pounds, won the 168-pound class. He started at linebacker for the Bullpups this fall.

University High freshman Tommy Owen, son of former North Idaho College coach John Owen, won at 101 at the same tournament. Owen moved to the Spokane Valley so he could wrestle for his uncle, Don, a former head coach at Coeur d’Alene.

The Post Falls school board Monday voted to add boys and girls golf teams this spring.

Post Falls was the lone Inland Empire League school not to offer the sport. The teams will practice and compete at Highlands Country Club.

A coach must still be hired.

Moscow and Kellogg were picked second and fifth, respectively, in this week’s A-2 basketball poll and defending state A-4 champ Lakeside was ranked second behind Troy.

Highland lost the A-1 state basketball championship to Madison last winter, but the Rams start this season as the top-ranked team among the state’s biggest schools.

Lake City (7-0) remained ranked No. 1 in the A-1 girls basketball poll this week.

A complete listing of all boys and girls polls and standings can be found in the Stat Sheet.
