NBC Sports and the U.S. Golf Association agreed on a new four-year contract that will keep the USGA’s championships on the network through 2003.

Former world No. 1 Steffi Graf is expected to return from knee surgery at next month’s Australian Open, where she is a four-time champion.

Graf was among the list of players scheduled to compete in the event when entries were closed.

Negotiations for a heavyweight unification bout between Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield will be called off unless a contract is signed by Friday, Lewis’ promoter said.

Promoter Panos Eliades said Lewis, the WBC champion, will fight either James “Buster” Douglas or Shannon Briggs in March if no deal is reached with Don King.

University of Michigan wrestler Jeff Reese, 21, a junior from Wellsburg, N.Y., collapsed and died during a workout Tuesday night in Ann Arbor.

An autopsy is planned.

Greg Davis, the architect of new Texas coach Mack Brown’s offense at North Carolina, has been named as the Longhorns’ offensive coordinator.
