Puff Daddy Lands Five Nominations
Rapper and music-industry entrepreneur Puff Daddy landed five nominations to lead the pack for next month’s 25th annual American Music Awards.
The hip-hop executive’s crossover appeal was evidenced by his nominations for favorite male artist in the pop/rock, rap/hip-hop and soul/R&B categories. He also received a nomination for favorite new soul/R&B artist, while his “No Way Out” received a mention for favorite soul/R&B album.
British sensation Spice Girls and modern rock act the Wallflowers scored three nominations each and will go head-to-head in all three pop/rock categories - favorite band, duo or group; favorite album (for “Spice” and “Bringing Down the Horse,” respectively) and favorite new artist.
Ten other acts received two nominations apiece: Babyface, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Dru Hill, Jewel, Matchbox 20, LeAnn Rimes and George Strait.
The 25th AMAs mark the return of Alabama to the favorite country group category, an award it had won every year from 1983 until last year.
The awards show will be held Jan. 26 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with Drew Carey as host.
AMA winners are selected by the public, but nominees are chosen based on data from SoundScan and trade publication Radio & Records.
