Erickson Delays Qb Decision

Tacoma News Tribune

Jon Kitna proved a point to coach Dennis Erickson and the Seahawks Sunday in Oakland. He’s a step closer to being the franchise’s quarterback of the future.

“He’s got a great future,” Erickson said. “He’s going to be a starter in the league and be very successful. I think he can be a starter next year without a doubt.”

Though Kitna showed signs of being a competent NFL quarterback with his 283-yard performance in Sunday’s 22-21 victory over the Oakland Raiders, the organization has plenty of decisions to make about the quarterback position before next season. Warren Moon is 41, reserving thoughts of retirement until he finds out the direction of the team. Unlucky John Friesz is finishing the season as the scout team quarterback.

Such is life with the NFL’s No. 1 ranked passing offense.

“We have three really good quarterbacks,” Erickson said. “I think a lot of the future depends on what Warren (Moon) decides to do. I don’t think he’s made any decision on it (retirement). He’s not going to make a decision until things settle around here.”

Moon said Sunday that he’d like to finish his career in Seattle, but he has to find out if the Seahawks want him back. Moon has to find out if there is a change in coaching that could affect his willingness to return. If he doesn’t fit into the Seahawks plans, then he’d evaluate the possibility of playing elsewhere.

“We’ll talk about the future and see what he wants to do,” Erickson said. “I think he can play another year at the very least and be productive.”
