Ferris Wins On Late Pins

Ferris let its early chances slip away, then used late-match lightning to edge Rogers 35-33 Thursday in a Greater Spokane League wrestling meet at Ferris.

Tyson Bevin (168 pounds), Ty Williams (178) and Chad Cluever (190) closed out the meet with first-round pins as the Saxons (2-1) reversed Rogers’ 33-17 lead.

The Pirates (2-1) had the early-match fortune, as Marshal Sims (275), Andy Dahl (115) and Tony Kenyon (141) earned wins that could have gone the other way.

Sims scored a takedown in overtime for a 7-5 win after Jeremy Morton attempted a head-and-arm move. Nathan Yates led Dahl 7-2 when he was caught on a third-period pin. Kenyon pinned Jose Rodriguez, also in the third round, after trailing 6-2.

Elsewhere in the league, Lewis and Clark edged Mount Spokane 32-30, Central Valley defeated North Central 48-15 and Gonzaga Prep defeated Shadle Park 63-6. Mead (2-1) defeated University (1-2) 41-29.

At LC, the Tigers (1-2) won four consecutive matches, starting at 141, to pull away from the Wildcats (0-3).

At CV, the Bears (3-0) had three pins and down-to-the wire wins from Brandon Bouge (275) and Brandon Bishop (141) to top NC (1-2). Bouge scored a takedown with 30 seconds left to edge Derek Phillips 4-3. Jeremy Shay lost to Bishop 7-5 on a takedown 1:30 into overtime.

At Shadle, G-Prep (3-0) registered seven pins despite resting state veterans Nick Bliss and Travis Pascoe. Shadle fell to 0-3.

Gymnastics

U-Hi and Ferris continued atop the pack as the GSL had its final meets until the leaders meet in three weeks at Shadle.

Coleen Pierce won the all-around title without an individual win, edging teammate Tara Hulbert as U-Hi (11-0) won a five-way meet at its home gym by scoring 160.775.

Pierce scored 33.35 to the 33.3 of Hulbert, the winner on vault and uneven bars. Balance-beam winner Vanessa Cordova and Alisa Brandle gave U-Hi a 1-4 finish in the all-around. Floor exercise winner Lindsay Linerud guided CV (9-2) to second place, with 156.55 points.

Mead (4-8), Mt. Spokane (1-11) and LC (0-10) also competed at U-Hi.

At Rogers, all-around winner Kacey Frederickson won every event except the bars to guide Ferris (10-1) to an easy win at a four-way.

Frederickson scored 34.65, including an 8.9 on floor.

Amber Baines of NC (5-4) was third all-around, while teammate Heidi McCullough won the bars.

Mary Bass of Shadle (5-5) scored 7.8 to place seventh on the vault, one place ahead of Sandra Kanan of the host Pirates (3-7).

GNL basketball

Brent Cummings totaled 27 points and seven rebounds in Pullman’s 84-60 win over visiting Lakeside (1-2, 0-1) in a Great Northern League boys basketball game made up after a postponement from last Friday.

Cummings made 10 of 12 field-goal attempts as the Greyhounds (3-0, 2-0) shot 53 percent from the floor.

The game had been rescheduled because of Pullman’s extended football season.
