Emmeline Ziegenhagel Spokane

Emmeline (Flegel) Ziegenhagel was born 101 years ago today in Kulm, N.D.

Mrs. Ziegenhagel, who has been an Inland Northwest resident for 36 years, now lives at the Camlu Retirement Apartments.

She taught school in a one-room school in North Dakota, but didn’t like it and returned to school for a business degree and later worked as a bookkeeper.

She married David Ziegenhagel in 1919, and after her marriage, was a postmaster in Lehr, N.D.

Mr. Ziegenhagel died in 1975.

They had two children: Delores Utgaard of Spokane and Lucille Young of Palo Alto, Calif. She has seven great-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Ziegenhagel attributes her longevity to good food and good vodka martinis.
