Ridden by Gary Stevens, Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Silver Charm, in his first start in seven months, finished second, a half-length behind 9-1 shot Lord Grillo, in the $200,000 Malibu Stakes, the opening-day feature at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

The result of a two-week investigation is that no criminal charges will be filed in the death of University of Michigan wrestler Jeff Reese, 21, who collapsed Dec. 9 following a severe weight loss regimen.

An autopsy concluded Reese died of a “metabolic derangement” from his efforts to lose 12 pounds in one day to qualify at a 150-pound weight class. Wearing a rubber suit, he’d worked out for 2 hours in a 92-degree room.

British Home Secretary Jack Straw said convicted soccer hooligans could be banned from traveling to France for next year’s World Cup.

Straw said he was urging police, prosecutors and the courts to take advantage of a special law that allows them to impose “restriction orders” on fans who have been convicted of soccer-related offenses.
