Titans Take Win, But Not Sneaker

GSL boys

Central Valley coach Rick Sloan had a coaching decision to make and a 50-50 chance to be right.

He was wrong.

University drilled eight 3-pointers and narrowly averted blowing a seven-point lead in the final 38 seconds to beat Central Valley 56-53 Friday night.

The wild Greater Spokane League basketball game was played before a conservatively estimated, overheated full-house crowd of 1,800 for the Stinky Sneaker game at University. CV regained the traveling spirit trophy.

“They shot so well. I told the kids they couldn’t keep hitting, don’t worry about it,” said Sloan. “From their half-court set they didn’t get much. They live by the 3, they die by the 3 and they won by the 3.”

The Bears (7-8, 6-5), had a 31-24 lead when Marc Heimbigner hit a 3 from the right corner 3 seconds before half-time, the fourth 3 of the second quarter for the Titans (9-6, 6-4).

Aaron Fryer started the second half with another 3 and Erik Carlson followed with a putback to put U-Hi up 32-31. Fryer’s 3 made it 39-35 but Ryan Smith, who was virtually unstoppable for the Bears with 22, scored twice to tie the game by the end of the quarter.

The Titans never trailed in the fourth quarter. When Jeff Price fed Erik Carlson and then Nick Earling stole the ball and drove for a layup, U-Hi was up 54-48 with 1:22 to go. The Bears turned the ball over and Fryer made 1 of 2 foul shots for a 55-48 lead with 38 seconds left.

From there, Tom Perkes got an easy putback. After the Titans missed the front end of a one-and-one, Smith hit 1 of 2 foul shots with 16 seconds remaining. U-Hi botched the inbounds play, leading to a gimme bucket for Perkes and a 55-53 game with 11 seconds to go. Three seconds later, Heimbigner missed a one-and-one. With 3 seconds to go the Bears had a controversial turnover, with CV claiming a ball deflected out of bounds off a Titan. Heimbigner made one foul shot with 1 second to go for the final margin.

University only made 6 of 13 free throws, including 4 of 9 in the fourth quarter. However, the Titans made 21 of 38 shots, including half of their 16 3’s.

“We concentrated on flashing a little quicker to the high post,” U-Hi coach Jay Humphrey said. “We didn’t score from there but we tried to break down their press. The reverse pass from the high post gave us some good looks for 3s.”

Meanwhile, CV made just 2 of 19 3’s but was 21 of 30 on 2’s.

Decent shooting kept U-Hi in the game in the first half because the Bears scored 13 points off nine Titan turnovers. Six CV baskets were layups. Smith had 12 of his points, scoring at will by blowing past the Titans for layups or pulling up for short jumpers.

Price had 16 points for U-Hi with three 3s and Nick Earling had 10 with two 3s. Marc Hinkley was perfect on six shots for 12 points for CV.
