Kids’ Concert Features Celtic Nots
Children of all ages can bop to the beat of the Celtic Nots at the KPBX Kids’ Concert at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the Spokane Public Library, downtown.
The Spokane-based Irish quartet will share traditional jigs, reels and British sing-alongs during the hour performance.
KPBX-FM, Spokane’s listener-supported public radio, hosts several free concerts throughout the year to introduce children to a variety of music.
Admission is free to Saturday’s event, underwritten by PEMCO Financial Services, Boise Cascade and the Cheney Cowles Museum.
And, mark your calendars for the next Kids’ Concert, March 15, featuring Holladay and Siems, a country-western group. That concert will also be at 2 p.m. at the downtown Spokane Public Library.

The Spokane Public Library has a collection of more than 200 CD-ROM titles available for check out to registered cardholders.
Kids will enjoy such software titles as “Magic School Bus,” “Explorapedia,” “Science Sleuths,” “How Your Body Works,” “Where In the USA Is Carmen San Diego” and more.
The collection is intended for home use, with operating instructions included with each title. Formats are available for both Windows and Macintosh computers.
Library patrons may check out two adult and two children’s CD-ROMs at one time. All titles are listed in the library’s online catalog.

Parents and children are invited to learn easy ballroom, swing, country and Latin steps in a new dance class offered by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department.
“Family Social Dances” are from 6 to 7 p.m., Sundays, at Class Acts Dance Academy, 117 E. Boone. There are still openings for the eight-week session in progress. For more information, call 625-6200.
Kids 10 and under can enjoy a cake walk, fishing pond, football throw and more, Friday at the annual Winter Carnival at Spokane Falls Community College, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive.
Sponsored by The Early Learning Center, family festivities are from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in SFCC’s SUB Cafeteria, Building 17.
Free snacks go to the first 400 attendees. There will also be guest appearances from Frosty the Snowman and the crash-test dummies, Vince and Larry.
Proceeds from the fund-raiser will go toward the purchase of special supplies and equipment for the learning center.
Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Early Learning Center, Room 158, Building 16, on the SFCC campus. Advance tickets are four for $1; and three for $1 at the door.

Plan a weekend getaway for your valentine. Married couples of all faiths can learn how to add romance, excitement and depth to their relationships at the Marriage Encounter Weekend, Feb. 14-17, at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center in Spokane.
The retreat is sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a nonprofit organization of the Roman Catholic Church. All ages are invited for an opportunity to improve communication skills and enjoy spiritual renewal.

Nonprofit notes
Spokane Community Gardens will hold a volunteer training session at 11 a.m., March 8.
The nonprofit organization’s mission is to decrease hunger, improve nutrition and increase the well-being of low-income families through the creation of vegetable gardens.
Volunteers may join the group and choose projects such as construction of gardens, monthly newsletter publication, program planning, fund-raising and mentoring programs.
In two years, Spokane Community Gardens has built gardens for 40 local families, including group homes. This year, the group is planning cooperative efforts with SNAP and the Spokane Food Bank.

Daughters of the American Revolution Esther Reed Chapter will conduct a business meeting at 11 a.m., Saturday, followed by a noon luncheon at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 314 S. Spruce.
An awards ceremony at 1 p.m. will honor first-place winners of the American History Essay Awards: Sarah Baxter from Garry Middle School, and Audum Hart from Chewelah Jenkins High school. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.
