U.S. Soccer Team Held To Tie

Compiled From Wire Services

The United States’ winless streak grew to six when the Americans tied China 1-1 in their last exhibition game prior to the final round of World Cup soccer qualifying.

The United States (0-4-1 in 1997), using just four regular starters, went ahead on Alexi Lalas’ header in the 25th minute, his first international goal since October 1995. Lalas scored off a corner kick by Tony Sanneh, making his first international start.

Su Maozhen tied the score 6 minutes later for China, which beat the U.S. team 2-1 Wednesday.

The Americans start the final round of qualifying in the North and Central American region March 2 at Jamaica, then play Canada on March 16 at Stanford, Calif.
