Umpires Won’t Mix

Compiled From Wire Services

Baseball umpires gained an additional week of vacation each season under an agreement that calls for them to work only in their league’s ballparks during interleague play.

Instead of mixing A.L. and N.L. umpires, as is done during the All-Star game and World Series, A.L. umpires will work all regular-season games in A.L. ballparks, and N.L. umpires will be used exclusively in N.L. ballparks.

Umpires union head Richie Phillips finalized the deal with acting commissioner Bud Selig during breaks in a meeting with owners and players, then announced it about 2 hours after the session ended.
