All but one of the top two seeds in each weight class advanced through Friday’s first two rounds of the Greater Spokane League district wrestling tournament at Mead High School, setting up some interesting matchups in today’s semifinals and finals.
The final day of competition starts at 11 a.m., with banged-up Central Valley trying to successfully defend its district crown.
The Bears advanced seven wrestlers - including Courtney Brown, the top seed at 158 - to the semis, but suffered a major blow when Blair Alderman, the No. 2 seed at 168, dropped a 10-6 quarterfinal decision to Lewis and Clark’s Neil Carson.
Returning individual champions who advanced Friday were LC’s Brian Lehman (108), CV’s John Reese (115), Mead’s John Rugan (115), University’s Andy Roberts (129), Gonzaga Prep’s Nick Bliss (148) and North Central’s David Sandberg (190).
Results of Friday’s first day of competition in the Frontier League district tournament at Pullman High School were not made available, but all of the top seeds reportedly advanced - most with byes - and the majority of matches wrestled involved junior varsity competitors.
Today’s competition, which includes the semifinals and finals, starts at 10 a.m.
