In a preview of things to come, Andrea Kallas hit three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot, starting fifth-ranked Central Valley on the way to a 62-54 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep Tuesday night in Greater Spokane League play.
The game was tied at 44 when Kallas stepped to the line and when she left, the Bears were ahead for good.
The free-throw theme continued in the fourth quarter as Central Valley made 8 of 10 from the line, making the Bears 20 of 26 for the game.
“We weren’t in sync tonight,” said CV coach Dale Poppenroth. “The free throws saved us.”
Free throws made the difference the first time the teams played, with Crystal Lee making a pair with 7 seconds left to give CV a 57-56 win. That started the Bears (16-2, 13-1) on a nine-game winning streak and now they have clinched a berth in the regional tournament that follows the district tournament.
The Bears opened the game with three 3s to lead 9-2 in the opening minutes and led 33-23 at the half.
But the Bullpups (9-4, 12-5) went on a 13-4 run near the end of the third quarter to tie the game at 44.
Jennifer Williams and Theresa Palmer led the Prep offense with a tough high-low post game. Prep connected on easy shots and a lot of put-backs under the basket.
Williams finished with a season-high 18 points, Palmer added 17.
