Pirates Rehire Stargell

Compiled From Wire Services

Willie Stargell is back.

Stargell, a long-missing link to the championship teams of the 1970s, rejoined the franchise as an assistant to general manager Cam Bonifay.

Stargell will evaluate major- and minor-league talent for next winter’s expansion draft. He also will work with the rebuilding Pirates’ corps of younger players.

Shortstop John Valentin agreed to a $3.75 million, one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox and avoided an arbitration hearing scheduled for later in the week.

Jim Fregosi, fired as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies after last season, was made a special assignment scout and instructor for the San Francisco Giants.
