Wv Forces Showdown With Cheney
Frontier League
When tournament time rolls around in the Frontier League, matters are rarely uncomplicated, and 1997 will be no exception, at least in the boys’ half of the bracket.
The Cheney Blackhawks traveled to West Valley Saturday night with an opportunity to lock up the Frontier’s No. 2 seed into the District 7-AA tourney that will send two teams to the State AA tournament.
Instead, they were handed a 52-42 loss by the Eagles, who forced a one-game playoff Tuesday night at East Valley. The winner will join regular-season champion Colville with a first-round bye, while Tuesday’s loser jumps into first-round loser-out action Friday.
WV (14-6, 8-4) hit their first three shots and never trailed the Hawks (13-7, 8-4), although Cheney crept within a basket late in the third period.
The Eagles played especially tough defense, although WV coach Joe Feist was quick to point out that “Cheney’s a much better shooting team than we saw tonight.”
The difference was most telling in the backcourt, where WV’s starting guards outscored Cheney’s 36-10. Cheney’s Tucker Urdahl was held to one field goal and eight points as the Eagles worked hard to keep the ball out of his hands.
The Blackhawks made only 3 of 18 first-half field-goal attempts, but stayed within five points, 20-15, with 9-for-12 free-throw shooting.
