Booker Steals Win For Huskies

Associated Press

Pac-10

Jamie Booker stole an inbound pass and converted a three-point play with 8 seconds remaining to lift Washington past Arizona State 72-69 Thursday night at Tempe, Ariz.

After a Jan Wooten free throw pulled the Huskies within 69-67 with 10.7 seconds to go, Booker stole Mike Batiste’s inbound pass and sank a 6-foot jump shot while being fouled by Batiste.

Jeremy Veal missed an off-balance jump shot with 2.1 seconds to go, and Patrick Femerling added a pair of free throws to provide the final margin of victory.

Booker scored five consecutive points and Todd MacCulloch added a layin as the Huskies pulled within 67-66 with 20.7 seconds remaining.

Booker, the lone senior on the Huskies’ roster, downplayed his steal and instead gave credit to his teammates’ defense.

“I don’t think the steal was the big key,” Booker said. “I think the big key was some of the other players denying the basketball on the wing and making them hesitate. I think he (Batiste) lost his balance and had to throw the ball in anywhere. He did and it cost them.”

“We were a little frazzled late in the game when ASU made the rally,” said UW coach Bender, whose Huskies have posted three straight wins over the Sun Devils after losing the previous 14 meetings. “I’m most proud of the end-of-the-game clock management. We didn’t have to get the 3-pointers.”
