Nic Basketball Teams Face Difficult Weekend On The Road
North Idaho College, pursuing its first men’s league basketball title since 1985 and its first women’s crown since 1989, visits Salt Lake tonight and Utah Valley on Saturday.
NIC’s men won the Region 18 North in ‘85, the precursor to the current Scenic West Athletic Conference, which includes four Utah schools and Colorado Northwestern.
But the Cardinals won’t be at full strength. Backup forwards Leonard Myles and Bo Johnson didn’t accompany the team because they apparently missed classes this week.
Salt Lake (21-7 overall, 9-7 SWAC) has played well of late, thanks to the emergence of 6-foot-7 forward Isaac Sojourner. Utah Valley (22-6, 11-5) will be without LeLand Osborne, a talented transfer from South Alabama who was dismissed this week for numerous absences from classes.
NIC, tied with College of Eastern Utah at 13-3 in the SWAC, will host the Region 18 men’s and women’s tournaments next week.
NIC’s women (24-2, 14-2) hold a one-game lead over Salt Lake (21-7, 13-3) and Utah Valley (22-6, 13-3).
Salt Lake has won 11 straight, NIC seven and Utah Valley 17 of its last 18. NIC swept those schools at Coeur d’Alene in December.
Herbert honored
Lake City High junior wing Lindsay Herbert was tabbed player of the year in the Inland Empire League by IEL basketball coaches.
Herbert was joined on the first team by LC junior center Alison Asher and senior guard Katie Hatrock, Post Falls sophomore forward Janelle Ruen, and Lewiston senior posts Sara McEachern and Laura Bloom.
Second-team selections were Lake City’s Laura Dodge, Lewiston’s Alison Roberts and Brooke Cushman, Coeur d’Alene’s Kellie Stern and Patti Stranger, and Post Falls’ Jessica Waltz.
Jennifer Glaser and Jennifer Swanstrom of Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene’s Andrea Wilkey, Sandpoint’s Chrissy Ross, and Lewiston’s Debbie Cain received honorable mention.

Lakeside High’s Margaret SiJohn was selected MVP of the North Star League.
Teammates Harmony Hammons and Angela Flint joined her on the All-NSL team.
Others tabbed were Katie Elwood of Mullan, Emilee Jackson of Falls Christian, and Jamie Bornitz, Anna Goodson and Shennelle Kraack of Kootenai.
