Wearing a Stars and Stripes baseball cap, teenager Justin Gimelstob scored a major tennis victory for the United States.

The 19-year-old UCLA student defeated Australia’s Mark Philippoussis 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), leading the Americans into the final of the Hopman Cup mixed team championship.

Gimelstob’s success followed a 7-5, 6-0 victory by Chanda Rubin over Australia’s Nicole Bradtke in women’s singles and gave the U.S. team an insurmountable 2-0 lead. The United States finished on top of Group A in the round-robin competition and will face either South Africa, Romania or Switzerland in Saturday’s title match. It is the first time since 1991 the Americans have made the final.
