T-Wolves Dominate Iel Opener
Earlier in the season, the Post Falls High girls basketball team defeated Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., in overtime.
Lakeside upset Inland Empire League favorite Lake City on Friday. So the IEL opener Saturday between Post Falls and Lake City figured to at least be competitive, right?
Wrong. LC’s Timberwolves thoroughly dominated the Trojans, 73-24, at LC.
And that’s the kindest way of describing the blowout.
After a steal and a layup by Jennifer Swanstrom cut LC’s lead to 6-4 midway in the first quarter, things collapsed for the Trojans.
LC did what a good team should do in the situation: It kept adding to the Trojans’ problems.
The top-ranked Timberwolves (11-2) outscored the Trojans (5-5) 34-0 the rest of the first half for a 40-4 advantage at intermission.
During that stretch, Post Falls missed 22 straight shots and all 13 of its attempts in a scoreless second period.
LC, meanwhile, was getting good looks out of its halfcourt sets and in transition. The Timberwolves made 14 of 23 shots in the first half, 27 of 48 for the game.
Post Falls was 2 of 26 in the first half, and the Trojans warmed up ever so slightly to finish 9 of 51.
“I’d go talk to the winning coach guys,” Post Falls coach Chris Johnson said to a pair of reporters. “We can play better than this, but obviously Lake City is a great ballclub. We got off to a bad start and then got very frustrated, and frustration led to mistakes.”
Johnson said it was easily his team’s worst game.
And LC responded the way T-Wolf coach Dave Stockwell expected following what he called a “wakeup call” against Lakeside the night before.
“I think last night’s game against Lakeside told the kids they needed to bring their game up a little bit,” Stockwell said. “We owned the inside and they had a hard time shooting against us inside. And that kind of set the tone early.”
The T-Wolves scored relatively at well from all over the court. They went to 6-foot-4 junior post Alison Asher early and countered with Lindsay Herbert’s jumpers and driving baskets.
Herbert finished with a game-high 22 points and Asher had 12. All nine T-Wolves scored.
The Trojans’ leading scorer, sophomore Janelle Ruen, came in averaging 14.7 points per game. Ruen and the other starters scored just 12 points combined. Ruen finished with four points, all in the second half.
With 15 points in the final period, Post Falls doubled its scoring in the first three quarters.
“We’re still pretty inexperienced in a couple of places so when we get off to a shaky start we have a tendency to press too hard and try to get it back all at once,” Johnson said. “The shots just weren’t going for us and the more we pressed the worse it went.”
At Lewiston, the Bengals defeated Sandpoint 61-22 in another league opener.
