Seles Won’t Defend

Defending women’s singles champion Monica Seles told Australian Open officials that a broken finger sustained during an exhibition in Slovakia last month will prevent her from playing in their upcoming tournament.

Her announcement follows the decision of Andre Agassi to bypass the event to take a break before starting his 1997 playing schedule.
